Google's Got Talent: Age of Gemma 2 🦸

Google has unveiled Gemma 2, the latest iteration of its open AI model family. Available in both 9 billion (9B) and 27 billion (27B) parameter sizes, Gemma 2 represents a significant advancement in performance and efficiency over its predecessor. What sets it apart is its ability to compete with models twice its size, delivering performance that was only achievable with proprietary models until recently.

Key Performance & Features:

Built on a redesigned architecture, Gemma 2 is engineered for exceptional performance and inference efficiency.

  • The 27B model offers best-in-class performance for its size

  • The 9B model outperforms competitors like Llama 3 8B.

  • Gemma 2 is optimized for blazing-fast inference across a wide range of hardware, from gaming laptops to high-end desktops and cloud-based setups.

  • Gemma 2 is designed for seamless integration into existing workflows, making it an attractive option for developers looking to enhance their AI projects.

Gemma 2 boasts broad framework compatibility, supporting major AI frameworks like Hugging Face Transformers, JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow. The model is optimized for NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM, with upcoming support for NVIDIA's NeMo. To facilitate easy deployment, Google Cloud customers will soon be able to manage Gemma 2 on Vertex AI.

Gemma 2 is now accessible through various platforms, including Google AI Studio, Kaggle, and Hugging Face Models. To support research and development, Google offers free access through Kaggle or via a free tier for Colab notebooks. Academic researchers can apply for the Gemma 2 Academic Research Program to receive Google Cloud credits.

Google Gemini is Siri's New Friend 🫂

Apple is gearing up to expand its AI offerings beyond ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the tech giant is set to announce a partnership with Google Gemini this fall. This move signals Apple's commitment to providing users with diverse AI options. While Anthropic might join the lineup in the future, Meta's Llama chatbot didn't make the cut due to performance issues.

Apple Intelligence: Apple's homegrown AI solution, Apple Intelligence, is on the horizon. Initially launching in beta form this fall, it's exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. The company sees AI as more than just a feature to sell hardware; it's exploring ways to generate direct profits from this technology. This could potentially lead to subscription-only AI features in the future.

The AI Business: While Apple develops its own AI capabilities, it's not missing out on revenue opportunities. The company will benefit from its standard cut of in-app purchases when users sign up for AI partner subscriptions. This strategy allows Apple to monetize AI services even before fully rolling out its proprietary system.

Mercedes F1 is Turbocharging AI for Victory 🏆

In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, where victory can be decided by mere tenths of a second, effective IT systems are paramount. Mercedes F1, a dominant force in the sport, has long recognized this, forging partnerships with tech giants like AMD and HPE to power their operations.

AI in F1: 🏎️ Artificial Intelligence has become increasingly prevalent in Formula 1, with Michael Taylor, IT Director at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team stating that "generative AI has landed - it's almost the norm now." Teams are leveraging AI tools for time-saving and efficiency improvements, from code generation through Copilot to voice-to-text tools and digital assistants.

Challenges? The sport's deterministic nature, focused on optimizing car setup and configuration, doesn't always align perfectly with generative AI's capabilities. Despite this, Mercedes F1 fosters a culture of curiosity and quick learning among its workforce, encouraging the exploration and adoption of new technologies within the context of their specific needs.

Future with AI: AI is expected to play an increasingly important role in F1's future, with all teams currently exploring and developing AI capabilities. While the exact applications remain unclear, Taylor is certain that technology will continue to be a fundamental part of Formula 1 operations.

Cultivating the Future of Farming with AI 🧑‍🌾

Edge AI is poised to change agriculture forever, one of the world's oldest and most vital industries. By integrating AI algorithms directly into local devices at the network's edge, farmers can harness real-time data, make faster decisions, and improve overall efficiency. This technological leap promises to address the looming challenge of feeding a global population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050.

New Era of Sustainability: Smart farm vehicles and machines equipped with sensors and AI can precisely dispense optimal quantities of water and agrochemicals to individual plants or specific areas. This level of precision not only boosts productivity but also advances sustainability by reducing water usage and minimizing the application of fertilizers and pesticides.

AI's Green Thumb: AI shows promise in improving pest control, nutrient management, and even plant breeding. High-throughput computer vision cameras, for instance, could rapidly categorize plant types for cross-breeding, accelerating the development of weather-resistant crop varieties. This could lead to more resilient and productive farming systems worldwide.

From 'Made with AI' to 'AI Info’ 🏷️

Meta's journey in AI image labeling began with the "Made with AI" tag in May. However, this label caused confusion among photographers who found their minimally edited photos tagged as AI-generated. Responding to user feedback, Meta has now introduced a more nuanced "AI Info" label across its platforms, aiming to provide better context about AI involvement in image creation or modification.

Tech behind tags: Despite the label change, Meta's underlying technology for AI detection remains the same. The company continues to rely on technical metadata standards like C2PA and IPTC to identify AI tool usage. This means that even minor AI-assisted edits, such as those made with Adobe's Generative AI Fill, may trigger the new label. However, the detection system still struggles with identifying completely AI-generated images that lack proper metadata.

The Rise of AI Influencers 🤖

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media marketing, a new player has emerged: AI influencers. These computer-generated characters are designed to mimic real people, promoting products and brands across digital platforms. As ecommerce businesses seek innovative ways to reach audiences, AI influencers offer a unique blend of control, cost-effectiveness, and creativity.

Key Advantages:

1. Complete control over messaging and image

2. Potential cost savings compared to human influencers

3. 24/7 availability for content creation and engagement

4. Ability to experiment with new storytelling formats

Challenges to Consider:

1. Authenticity concerns among audiences

2. Limited emotional connection with followers

3. Ethical considerations and transparency issues

Notable AI Influencers:

- Lu do Magalu: Brazil's retail giant spokesperson

- Lil Miquela: Fashion and lifestyle influencer with 2.6M followers

- Imma: Japanese virtual influencer collaborating with luxury brands

- Shudu: AI supermodel featured in high-fashion editorials
