Newsweek Is Making Generative AI A Fixture In Its Newsroom

Back in September 2023 when Newsweek first announced its changes to the AI policy, at a time when the industry was literally bashing the use of generative AI in journalism with publications like Wired even denouncing tools like ChatGPT and promising never to publish text written or edited by AI, nobody thought Newsweek’s move would be seen as a disruptor for the entire industry. As Newsweek joins its competitors like Business Insider in taking a relatively bullish view on technology, their belief that AI tools can help journalists work faster, smarter and more creatively has certainly paid off so far. You will not only find a short note at the end of each of its article copy being transparent about how Newsweek uses AI, Newsweek has assured everyone that nobody has been forced to make use of the disruptive technology. While staff writers and editors have been encouraged to experiment with AI to boost speed and efficiency, Newsweek is certain to prove its mettle in next several months and year, distinguishing themselves from the newshouses who have decided to shun the use of this innovative technology. Google Set To Pump $100B+ Into AI, Says DeepMind Boss

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has recently mentioned in a Ted Conference in Vancouver that Google is indeed planning something for keeping up with Microsoft and OpenAI’s rumored $100 billion Stargate. While Hassabis did not get into the details, but he gave enough hint to indicate that Google is indeed prepared to invest heavily into the trending technology where a major avenue for that might be hardware. Despite DeepMind’s recent activities not being too impressive, Hassabis feels the progress made on getting AI to acquire social skills is a significant step towards making AI even smarter but it still requires humongous computing power which is one of the reasons DeepMind teamed up with Google in 2014. Generative AI Powered Fake News Might Have Bigger Impacts On Political Campaigns

While it is still not clear how much of an impact disinformation has on swinging an election to date, but a generative model meant to study the impact of the same has churned out some interesting results. While random releases of disinformation does tend to cause a growth in impact on the political campaigns, it dampens down over time due to fact checking. However if such release of disinformation is repeated persistently, then it will have an impact for sure as disinformation biased towards a given candidate will shift the poll slightly in favor of that candidate each time it is released as per the model’s simulation. Since elections pose a one-history problem for analysis of such impact, the generative model is amping up the prediction of probability of the impacts happening especially today when its quite easy to create fake news using Generative AI technology and as per intelligence from credible sources, China is set to test it out with the upcoming global elections in US and India.
